Latest three months against the previous three
The average of the last three months compared with the average of the three before, which smooths a noisy monthly series.
The ONS headline for monthly GDP is the three-month-on-three-month rate: it damps the noise of single months while still turning sooner than a year-on-year rate. A negative reading is the ONS's own working definition of a contraction.
